About the Connect Network

CONNECT NJ is a Network for African Student Associations in New Jersey. Its aim is to serve as a channel for the promotion of events and projects engaged in by all member institutions in New Jersey as well as a forum for developing initiatives to help redefine Africa's future.

To this end, we aim to harness the intellect, energy, talent and resources of all individuals with a genuine interest in the welfare of Africa by exploring the innovative ways through which our interests and areas of expertise can be applied to solving specific problems.

Following the vision of "The Reawakening", which was held to re- sensitize African Students to their role in elevating Africa, the CONNECT initiative was set up to increase membership and participation, strengthen relationships among members of African Students Associations in New Jersey as well as unify their collective efforts for increased achievement on events and projects.

Objectives include:

- To Strengthen relations among the African Student Associations (ASA's) in New Jersey higher institutions.
- To facilitate increased and improved networking among members.
- To provide notifications and updates on upcoming events
- To create an avenue for the intellectual exchange of ideas.
- To increase membership and participation
- To engage in activities that promote the overall image and welfare of Africans and all individuals of African descent.

CONNECT Interactive Updates - The CONNECT Awards

CONNECT New Jersey, is presently constituted of the African Student Associations at William Paterson University, Bloomfield College, Montclair State University, Seton Hall University, Essex County College, Rutgers-Newark and the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

The network held its inaugural awards ceremony on Friday, October 16, 2009 at the NJIT Hazell Ballroom amidst poetry, African cuisine, dance performances and award presentations to active students within each student group who exemplified

achievements in academics, entrepreneurship and service. Awards were also presented to individuals who have and continue to be instrumental to the growth of the network.

Hosts for the evening were Nana Ama-Damoa of ASA, Seton Hall University and Ekene Aguh of OAS, Rutgers Newark. Award recipients came from all the aforementioned institutions with the Guest of Honor and Distinguished Honoree for the evening being Dr. Zachary Yamba, President of Essex County College who spoke briefly to the students lauding their service efforts and offering words of counsel as they moved forward.

The network is working with non-profit organization Aid To West Africa (ATWA) to provide health and medical supplies to nations affected by war in the western region of the continent.
